The Fondation Toms Pauli and the Musée d'art et d'histoire de Genève have brought together a magnificent ensemble of Flemish tapestries which illustrate the great heroes of Ancient Rome. These seventeenth-century tapestries, woven in the leading Brussels workshops of the time, take us into the century of Louis XIV and its fascination with political and military virtue as exemplified in the heroic deeds of Alexander, Constantine and Scipio. The exhibition will also feature a selection of engravings, sculptures, artworks and medals.
Two of the Fondation Toms Collection tapestries are exceptional by virtue of their size (the largest is 40m2) and the fineness of their weave: The Story of Scipio the African, and The Story Titus and Vespasian. Catalogue in French.
