The first-ever account of the International Lausanne Biennials of Tapestry

From Tapestry to Fiber Art. The Lausanne Biennials 1962-1995

Illustrated with 200 reproductions of works and installation views most of which are published here for the first time, this book charts the history of the Lausanne Biennials. It tells the story of the impact, vitality and international reach of the exhibitions which in sixteen editions displayed 911 works by more than 600 artists from all over the world.

After the Second World War, tapestry art enjoyed a period of new vigour with workshops and national manufactories across Europe taking part in the revival. When the City of Lausanne launched its first Tapestry Biennial exhibition in 1962, it became an international showcase for contemporary textile art. By promoting exchange and inspirational encounters, the event emerged as a unique and privileged platform for the key trends in the medium that took wall tapestry toward textile sculpture and on to Fiber Art.

Written and edited by Giselle Eberhard Cotton and Magali Junet, with contributions from Janis Jefferies, Odile Contamin, Keiko Kawashima, Marta Kowalewska, Jenelle Porter and Eric Rochat.
